Your career doesn’t have to make sense in a straight line.
Your career doesn’t have to make sense in a straight line.
Mine certainly doesn’t.
I graduated high school in 1999.
For the next several years, life was a combination of working, going to school, and caring for my mom.
In 2009, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Management.
In 2010, my mom died and all be it bumpy I kept going.
In 2011, I earned my first Master’s degree.
Then, in 2013, I took a turn and became a Youth Director at a church, and that experience eventually led me toward Seminary which kicked off some deeper thought and decisions.
I didn’t want spirituality limited to church walls. I believed we were supposed to be the church in the world—showing up in people’s actual lives.
In 2017, I graduated with my Master of Divinity.
And then…
Two weeks later, I walked into 24 Hour Fitness and became a personal trainer.
Yes. You read that correctly.
M.Div. → Personal Trainer.
But it wasn’t as random, it was intentional.
I’d spent years studying people, purpose, formation, relationships, and the human experience.
So I chose to start where most people took- the body.
A year into it I found a way to be involved in some ministry work in 2018 as a Vocation & Formation Group Leader, a role that blended teaching, facilitation, and coaching.
Then came 2019.
I was working full-time as a trainer, group exercise instructor, Vocation & Formation Group Leader and starting my coaching practice, I was diagnosed fibroids with debilitating symptoms.
That experience led me to Reiki and opened another layer of curiosity about the relationship between our physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual lives.
Then the pandemic hit.
And during that period, I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training and my Evidence-Based Coaching Graduate Certificate.
The programs actually overlapped by a week.
Looking back, I can see something I couldn’t necessarily see while I was living it:
My career wasn’t a straight line.
It was a series of chapters.
Each one gave me another lens through which to understand people.
Management.
Education.
Ministry.
Caregiving.
Fitness.
Reiki.
Yoga.
Coaching.
And eventually those seemingly different pieces make something beautiful together- Harmony
Mind. Body. Soul. Play.
So if your career doesn’t look like a perfectly planned progression, I want you to know something:
You’re collecting experiences.
You’re developing a perspective you couldn’t have developed any other way.
You don’t see the connection until years later.
The thing that looks like a detour becomes one of the most important pieces of your story.
“What have all these experiences taught me that I can uniquely bring to the world?”
What’s one part of your career journey that seemed completely unrelated at the time—but makes more sense looking back?
And if you’re currently standing at a career crossroads, reinventing yourself, or trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together, that’s exactly the kind of conversation I love having through coaching.
